A pair of warblers resting on a peony. It is a truly challenge to fit everything in such a small space. If the painting size is big, the arrangement would have many possibilities to tell the story.

The peony has both the quality of elegance and nobility no matter which kind or what color. I enjoy studying and looking at the different stages of its beauty, from bud to full bloom. No wonder Chinese think of the peony as the symbol of fortune seeing how it flourishes so splendidly.

Hope is like a "drug". We can't live without hope. Hope is something that can really make us have a peaceful mind when we are feeling terribly sad and helpless. I really wonder if only human beings have a such wonderful "drug" to heal their soul.

Cool moments in the summer are a wonderful time to reflect on the rhythms of life. There were many times when I would sit at pond's edge and paint such scenes. Now, in the grip of winter, this type of coolness is appreciated.

On the Way to Market

On the Way to Market © 2008
3.5'' x 5'' Watercolor

People like to ask me how long it takes to paint a detailed-style painting. I wish I could give them an answer but I can't because usually I work on several pieces at one time to avoid the "numbness" of working on one piece all the time.

After Rainfall

After Rainfall © 2008
13.5'' x 18'' Watercolor

SOLD

Today I spent some time in an art gallery. There were oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, aqua tint and gouache paintings, it's quite impressive. I was fascinated by all the different materials that artists used to paint on. They painted oil paintings on paper, linen, panel, silk, hardboard, copper, Masonite, ivory and, of course, canvas.

This is a bit different from Chinese paintings which are painted on various types of paper and silk. It would be interesting to find out why there is such a difference in materials between the two cultures.

I put this rose painting on today. Can you tell the paper is as thin as a cicada's wing?

Yesterday it wasn't just New Years Eve, but also my daughter's birthday. We celebrated both, it was just fantastic. Today is the New Year, I called my mother who lives in Taiwan, we had a great conversation, we are going back to see her. My mother and I are both in high spirits and very excited for this trip. I look forward to seeing all my family! This is my New Year wish and gift!
Besides all this, my husband's novel (Dream of the Dragon Pool: A Daoist Quest) was just named Book of the Year for fiction 2007 (http://www.onlinereviewofbooks.com/) It is truly a new year! This is why I've put this new painting entitled --A Thousand Blessings up for today.
